I was struck by this tree in San Diego. We were in Balboa Park to visit some museums and we walked by this beautiful tree. I had never seen anything like it and knew I wanted to paint it. I love how it has scars.
During an expedition on the Yucatan Peninsula, our guide pointed out a similar tree and told us it is the sacred Mayan Tree of Life. For those of you who prefer Latin (you know who you are), its name is Ceiba pentandra.
I really should have exercised some creative license and cut down on the number of thorns though. Whew.
Here are a few photos from beautiful Balboa Park in San Diego.
